Youth Participation

Far from being problems to be solved, IYF recognizes young people as problem solvers themselves who can contribute their energy, idealism, and insights to a community’s growth and progress. One of the most effective ways to ensure young people develop the necessary values and leadership skills to succeed in the larger world is through experience—to learn by doing.

Many young people today are already leading active and engaged lives—working, volunteering, leading social change efforts, and playing positive roles in their communities. Yet many others lack the skills or opportunities to contribute. As a result, their vast potential to positively impact society goes largely untapped.

IYF places a priority on programs and strategies that promote youth participation and service to their communities. Through opportunities to become engaged, young people come to think of themselves as partners and stakeholders in society, acquiring a sense of responsibility for the common good and a positive attitude toward active citizenship. Perhaps most importantly, a young person who feels he or she has something to offer also feels a sense of belonging and a sense of worth—so critical to his or her positive growth and development. Among those programs supported by IYF and its Partners in this area:

  • YouthActionNet®, a dynamic online platform by and for young people that celebrates the vital role that youth play in leading positive change in their communities.

  • The Global Make a Connection program which promotes positive youth development by giving young people an opportunity to "make a connection" to their communities, to their families and peers, and to themselves. The program improves young people's educational opportunities, teaches them life skills, and helps them to make a positive contribution to their societies.

  • A program in Brazil that mobilizes college students to help tutor disadvantaged children in reading.

  • The adaptation of a comprehensive life skills program for adolescents in Japan as part of that country’s educational reform initiative. This program is being spearheaded by IYF’s partner, the Japan Initiative for Youth Development.

  • A custom-developed life skills program for Philippine out-of-school youth aimed at providing them with employability skills.
